SAN DIEGO (AP) -Chris Carlson, who spent four seasons working for Ben Howland at UCLA, was hired as the head coach at UC San Diego on Monday.
Carlson takes over for Bill Carr, who left to become an assistant at the University of San Diego after posting a 38-45 record in three seasons at UCSD, a Division II school. The Tritons were 12-15 last season and return all but one player.
“The opportunity to be the head coach at UCSD is a special one that also affords me the opportunity to return home,” said Carlson, 37.
At UCLA, Carlson was director of basketball operations, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program and being a liaison to the athletic administration and other school officials. He also helped with scheduling and recruiting.
Carlson worked with Howland at three other schools – Pittsburgh from 2002-03, Northern Arizona from 1998-01 and UC Santa Barbara from 1994-98.
“He will definitely be missed here,” Howland said.
Carlson is the third member of UCLA’s staff to become a head coach in the last two years. In April, Kerry Keating went to Santa Clara and last June, Ernie Zeigler went to Central Michigan.
