ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -Bryan Smithson scored a career-best 26 points Tuesday night to help North Carolina-Asheville beat Tusculum 84-73.
Smithson went 9-for-12 from the field and hit three 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (6-1), who are off to their best start in 23 years. K.J. Garland added 15 points and nine assists for UNC-Asheville.
Kyle Moore scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Pioneers (1-4). Moore finished 13-for-21 from the floor and hit six 3-pointers.
UNC-Asheville led by five points at halftime and increased the margin to 14 with about 11 minutes left before Tusculum rallied to as close as 65-62 with 5 minutes to play. The Bulldogs used a 9-2 run to put the game away, taking an 81-69 lead in the final minutes to seal it.
UNC-Asheville shot 56 percent, including 8-for-16 from 3-point range.
