RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Joey Rodriguez had just finished saying that he believes VCU has a great chance to win the national championship when someone challenged him.
Undaunted, Rodriguez didn’t back down. That’s just not his way.
Looking at the four teams heading for the Final Four, Rodriguez figures the Rams have been the most dominant so far – and he has a point. They’ve won five games by an average of 12.2 points.
All of them were against teams from every power conference except the SEC.
The Rams (28-11) face another mid-major in Butler (27-9) on Saturday, with Kentucky or Connecticut meeting in the other national semifinal game.
VCU coach Shaka Smart says Rodriguez is at the center of everything for his team. He not only provides leadership but embodies the little man complex the whole team has adopted.
