STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Penn State ushers in a new regime on the basketball court this season with Patrick Chambers taking over as coach.
Chambers replaces Ed DeChellis, who surprised his bosses in late May when he bolted his alma mater for the same job at Navy. It came two months after Penn State made its first NCAA tournament in a decade.
DeChellis leaves behind a potentially tough rebuilding job. Four senior starters are gone, including high-scoring guard Talor Battle.
At least point guard Tim Frazier is back, a solid building block for Chambers to run his up-tempo offense.
Otherwise, Chambers will need to rely on mainly seldom-used reserves or new recruits from the previous regime.
Chambers, though, has come through on his promise to energize the program with his upbeat personality.
