LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Sometimes a call from a curious stranger can help turn a basketball team into a national contender.
Kansas coach Bill Self was in his office one day when he picked up the phone and was asked if he would be interested in the Morris Twins. Self’s first thought would not have flattered the Philadelphia brothers: Who are the Morris Twins?
It turned out the call was from the high school coach of the brothers. And they turned out to be two of the most talented players the Jayhawks have ever had. Now they’re in their junior year and Marcus Morris leads No. 3 Kansas in scoring while brother Markieff Morris leads the Big 12 in rebounding and double-doubles.
Needless to say, Self is glad he was in his office to take the call.
