BOSTON (AP) -Eric Maynor scored 26 points, including 13 of his team’s final 17, as Virginia Commonwealth defeated Northeastern, 66-62, Wednesday night.
VCU (20-6, 13-3 Colonial Athletic Association) led for nearly the entire game but didn’t ice it until Jamal Shuler hit a free throw with 4.4 seconds left to account for the final scoring margin.
Northeastern (12-14, 8-8 CAA) took its only lead of the game at 40-39 on a Eugene Spates 3-point play with 13:28 remaining in the second half. Spates’ basket and free throw capped a 14-2 Huskies run.
But Maynor came right back with two free throws with 12:48 remaining to give the Rams a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Northeastern would get within a point several times but could never go ahead.
Matt Janning led a balanced Huskies attack with 15 points, while Chaisson Allen added 13 and Manny Adako had 12.
VCU took control early with a 10-2 run to start the game and opened up its biggest lead of the game at 32-19 with 2:33 remaining in the opening half.
Northeastern would make a game of it, but in the end Maynor and the Rams were too much. Shuler and Joey Rodriguez each added 11 points for VCU.
