HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (AP) -Tirrell Baines scored 21 points to lead four Marshall players in double figures in an 80-70 win against the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday night.
Tyler Wilkerson scored 15 points, Markel Humphrey had 14 and Damier Pitts added 10 for the Thundering Herd (6-4).
Cumberlands (9-1), an NAIA team, also got double-digit scoring from four players. Luke Fitzgerald led the Patriots with 20, Dustin Fothergill added 14, Chad Byron had 13 and Josh Phillips chipped in with 10.
Cumberlands led for most of the first half and, although its last lead came at 18-16 with 7:37 left in the period, the Patriots stayed with Marshall throughout.
The Patriots got within 68-66 with 5:15 left on a Fothergill 3-pointer, but Marshall went on a 12-4 run from there to seal the win.
Marshall hit 30 free throws compared to seven for Cumberlands.
