DePaul had the worst nonconference record among the 16 teams in the Big East. The Blue Demons are 1-0 in the league after an 84-76 upset of No. 17 Villanova on Thursday night.
“We got a fresh start. It’s a new season for us so we’re trying to look like a whole new team,” Cliff Clinkscales said. “We aren’t worried about our record. We have 17 games to go now so anything can happen. You are never out of it. You judge a season at the end of the season.”
Draelon Burns scored 20 points and Karron Clarke added 14 for DePaul (5-7) in the in the conference opener for both teams.

“We wanted to make a statement to our Big East competitors that we aren’t pushovers,” Burns said.
In other games involving ranked teams on Thursday, it was: No. 2 Memphis 102, Siena 58; No. 5 UCLA 76, No. 24 Stanford 67; No. 10 Marquette 96, Providence 67; No. 15 Vanderbilt 76, Rice 58; No. 21 Arizona 76, Oregon State 63; and California 92, No. 22 Southern California 82.
Freshman Corey Fisher had 23 points for Villanova (10-2), which trailed 60-44 with 8:42 left but got within 68-64 with 3:30 to go. Burns then made two free throws and had a steal and layup to put DePaul up 72-64 with 2:57 left.
“I just learned every night is going to be a battle (in the Big East). They (DePaul) played good, they came out with a lot of intensity and we just have to pick it up and learn from it,” Fisher said.
Villanova was just 1-for-11 from 3-point range in the first half and finished 6-for-26 from behind the arc.
“We just have to learn mental toughness on the road,” Wildcats coach Jay Wright said. “There was times when we just came down and turned the ball over. It was more just trying to do much.”
Villanova played without center Casiem Drummond who missed his third game with a stress fracture in his right ankle. It hasn’t been determined when he will return.
No. 2 Memphis 102, Siena 58
Jeff Robinson scored 20 points and Chris Douglas-Roberts added 19 to lead the Tigers (12-0) to their 39th straight home win. Joey Dorsey hit all five of his shots, scored 12 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked four shots for Memphis.
Kenny Hasbrouck led the Saints (7-5) with 18 points.
No. 5 UCLA 76, No. 24 Stanford 67
Josh Shipp hit five 3-pointers and scored 21 points for the visiting Bruins (13-1) in the Pac-10 opener for both teams. Russell Westbrook added 15 points for the defending Pac-10 champions, who won their sixth straight game and beat Stanford for the fourth time in five meetings.
Anthony Goods scored 17 points to lead the Cardinal (11-2), who had their seven-game winning streak snapped.
No. 10 Marquette 96, Providence 67
Dominic James scored 21 points and Lazar Hayward added 17 for the Golden Eagles (11-1), who won their seventh straight in the Big East opener for both teams. Ousmane Barro had a season-high 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Marquette.
Brian McKenzie had 21 points for the visiting Friars (9-4), who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
No. 15 Vanderbilt 76, Rice 58
Shan Foster had 24 points for the Commodores (14-0), who extended the best start in the program’s 108-year history. Vanderbilt forced a season-high 24 turnovers and blocked five shots.
M on Monday. They fell to 3-15 against Vanderbilt, and have never defeated the Commodores in Nashville.
No. 21 Arizona 76, Oregon St. 63
Jordan Hill had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Nic Wise, starting in place of injured freshman point guard Jerryd Bayless, scored 17 points for the Wildcats (10-3), who rallied from a seven-point deficit in the second half.
Freshman Omari Johnson, playing just his fifth game after missing the first 13 with an injured right cheekbone, scored a season-best 19 for the visiting Beavers (6-7) in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.
California 92, No. 22 USC 82
Eric Vierneisel, who was 6-for-35 from 3-point range this season, made consecutive 3s to break open a one-point game midway through the second half for the Bears (10-2) in the Pac-10 opener for both teams. Vierneisel’s two 3s put Cal up 72-65 with 5:44 to go and started a 15-3 run. He finished with a career-high 15 points.
Freshman O.J. Mayo had 34 points for the visiting Trojans (9-4) but missed seven of 10 3-pointers.
