NEW YORK (AP) – NBA Commissioner David Stern says he thinks eliminating teams will be on the table during collective bargaining as a way to solve the league’s financial woes.
He says the league and the players’ association may look to see if there are “cities and teams that cannot make it in the current economic environment.”
Speaking Friday in a preseason conference call, Stern says contraction is a sensitive subject for him. He says the league is “not spending a lot of time on it” but didn’t deny that it could be something to discuss.
CBSSports.com first reported Thursday that the league would “continue to be open to contraction,” after Stern said he wanted player costs reduced by $700-800 million.
