Sonics G Ray Allen undergoes ankle surgery

 

SEATTLE (AP) -Seattle SuperSonics guard Ray Allen had surgery Saturday to remove bone spurs in both of his ankles.
The All-Star will be in a walking boot for three to four weeks and then begin rehabilitation, the Sonics said in a news release. The typical recovery period is two to three months, the team said.
The arthroscopic surgery was performed by Dr. Richard Ferkel in Los Angeles.
Unable to tolerate the pain anymore and concerned about doing further damage, Allen decided late last month to have surgery on his left ankle. Allen had been bothered by the ankle since early February, but didn’t reveal the injury until March 1.
Nevertheless, after sitting out on March 1, Allen scored at least 22 points in each of the next seven games. But he sat down for good after struggling in a game March 18 in Portland.
Allen was averaging a career-high 26.4 points in 55 games and made his seventh All-Star appearance in February. He scored a career-high 54 points against Utah on Jan. 12.
Ferkel, a noted specialist on ankle injuries, operated on Allen’s right ankle in 2003.
