CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Former Milwaukee Bucks assistant Mike Sanders was hired Tuesday to replace Dell Curry, who stepped down as an assistant coach with the Charlotte Bobcats.
Curry changed his mind three months after accepting the position, saying he was concerned about the time commitment of the job. Instead, Curry will work in community relations for the team and have more time to attend the basketball games of his two sons.
“After having time to fully grasp the commitment of being an assistant coach, I realized I could not give up the necessary time away from my family,” Curry said. “However, I am pleased that I can still contribute to the organization and the players.”
Curry, who spent 10 of his 16 seasons in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets, had served as the Bobcats’ director of player development. In June, new coach Sam Vincent hired Curry as one of his assistants.
Curry and fellow former Charlotte Hornet Muggsy Bogues will head several community initiatives and work for the team’s in-house television crew next season.
“Although we will miss having Dell working with our players on a daily basis, we will still be able to utilize his and Muggsy’s experience to help our team improve both on and off the court,” Bobcats president Fred Whitfield said.
Sanders spent the past two seasons with the Bucks. Sanders, who played 11 years in the NBA with four teams, was an assistant the Asheville Altitude in the NBA’s developmental league.
Vincent also coached in the NBDL before spending last season as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks.
Phil Ford, Lee Rose, Jeff Capel and Paul Mokeski round out Vincent’s staff.
The Bobcats open training camp Oct. 2 in Wilmington, N.C.
