DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – With the 10-year anniversary of Dale Earnhardt’s death looming, Kevin Harvick is opening up about embracing Earnhardt’s legacy.
Harvick says it took him years to come to grips with replacing Earnhardt at Richard Childress Racing.
Harvick had tears in his eyes and a decade of emotion pouring from his heart when he caught everyone at RCR by surprise with a preseason speech two weeks ago.
Teammates say it was clear that Harvick knows what Earnhardt still means to the team.
Harvick was just 25 when Earnhardt died on Feb. 18, 2001, in a final-lap wreck at the Daytona 500. At the time, Harvick was a budding star in NASCAR’s second-tier series. He envisioned making the jump to the Sprint Cup Series, but never could have imagined it happening the way it did.
