BOSTON (AP) -Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis left Monday night’s game against Arizona prior to the top of the fifth inning after getting hit under the right eye by Mike Lowell’s one-hop throw during infield warmups.
Youkilis, who had his major league record for errorless chances at first end at 238 games when he dropped a throw on June 7, left with a bruise and bump under the eye.
The timing of his departure wasn’t very good for the Red Sox. Before the game, backup Sean Casey dropped the appeal of his three-game suspension for his part in a brawl against Tampa Bay on June 5.
Brandon Moss ended up replacing Youkilis in his major league debut at first base.
Youkilis hit a pair of homers in Sunday’s 5-3 win over St. Louis, including a game-winning, two-run shot in the bottom of the 13th.
