NEW YORK (AP) -The Yankees designated outfielder Bronson Sardinha for assignment Saturday, clearing room on the 40-man roster for left-hander Andy Pettitte.
Pettitte accepted salary arbitration Friday, putting off retirement to pitch for New York next year. The acceptance of arbitration appeared to be procedural since he had a standing $16 million offer from the Yankees.
They have 10 days to trade, release or send Sardinha to the minors. In 10 games as a September callup, Sardinha had three hits in nine at-bats and two RBIs.
