DETROIT (AP) -Jose Molina hit his second career grand slam to cap a 10-run seventh inning for the New York Yankees on Monday night.
The Yankees sent 14 batters to the plate against three Tigers pitchers. There were 56 pitches in the inning, which broke open a scoreless game.
Nick Swisher led off with a single off Ryan Perry, and Melky Cabrera walked. After Molina’s sacrifice, pinch-hitter Jorge Posada lifted what looked like a routine flyball to left field.
Josh Anderson held back on the ball, positioning himself for a throw, but he misjudged the trajectory and tried to make a hurried, low catch. He missed the ball for a two-base, two-run error.
Derek Jeter walked, and Johnny Damon blooped an RBI single to center off Nate Robertson. Mark Teixeira popped out, but Matsui and Cano made it 5-0 with RBI singles.
Swisher walked to load the bases, and Cabrera walked for the second time in the inning to force in the sixth run. Molina hit a grand slam off Brandon Lyon on the next pitch.
