MILWAUKEE (AP) -White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko is out of the starting lineup against the Milwaukee Brewers because of his nagging thumb injury.
Konerko had hoped to return quickly from the right thumb problem that involves a loose ligament. He left after Wednesday’s game when it flared up, got an injection and said he expected to be back Saturday at the latest.
Konerko hadn’t ruled out playing Friday in Milwaukee, but manager Ozzie Guillen said the slugger would go through pregame drills, rest and try to play on Saturday.
Guillen says Konerko has a good handle on the injury because he’s dealt with the condition for years.
Konerko is hitting .291 with eight homers and 39 RBIs despite an 8-for-42 slump. Josh Fields started at first.
