TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells is expected to return from a strained left hamstring and make his first spring training appearance this year on Friday as a designated hitter.
Last month, Wells re-injured the hamstring that kept him on the disabled list for a month late last season, when he hit .300 with 20 home runs and 78 RBIs in 108 games.
Toronto manager Cito Gaston said Wells might play three innings in the field Saturday before getting a day off Sunday.
In other news, third baseman Scott Rolen, who left Wednesday’s game with back stiffness, could take batting practice Friday and play Saturday.
Outfielder Travis Snider might miss a few days due a sore left knee. He also was hurt on Wednesday.
Right-hander Casey Janssen, who missed last season due to right shoulder surgery, left Thursday night’s game against the New York Yankees with one out in the first inning because of tightness in the shoulder.
