ATLANTA (AP) -Tim Hudson got his eighth straight win despite giving up Barry Bonds’ 759th homer and being called for a couple of balks, and Atlanta defeated San Francisco 6-3 on Wednesday night.
Bonds went deep on the first pitch of the sixth inning one week after breaking Hank Aaron’s record. The new home run king extended his lead just across the street from where the Hammer went past Babe Ruth with No. 715 in 1974.
Hudson (14-5) gave up three runs and eight hits in eight innings and he went 2-for-3, including a run-scoring single in the second that gave the Braves a 2-0 lead.
Hudson was twice called for balks by first-base umpire Angel Hernandez. Braves manager Bobby Cox was ejected for disputing the first one, the 133rd ejection of his career. On Tuesday, he broke the record he shared with Hall of Famer John McGraw by getting thrown out for arguing a called third strike.
Bonds’ homer tied the game at 2 in the sixth, but the Braves got four runs in the bottom half against Russ Ortiz (2-3) and two relievers. The go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch and Andruw Jones followed with a two-run double.
Bob Wickman worked the ninth for his 20th save.
Mets 10, Pirates 8
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Moises Alou hit a two-run homer in New York’s five-run first inning, and the Mets did all of their scoring in the first and ninth innings.
David Wright hit a two-run double ahead of Alou’s third homer in three games as the Mets roughed up Matt Morris for five hits while taking a 5-0 lead in the first.
Alou had a game-winning, two-run single Tuesday night and drove in four runs Sunday against Florida. He is 17-for-46 (.370) with six homers and 14 RBIs in is last 12 games.
The Mets took a 10-4 lead in the ninth, but Pittsburgh came back with four runs in the bottom half against reliever Aaron Sele, including Jason Bay’s two-run double to end an 0-for-13 slump. Billy Wagner got the final two outs for his 28th save.
John Maine (13-7) went five innings for the victory despite allowing solo home runs to Jose Bautista in the second and Nate McLouth in the fourth.
Morris (7-8), acquired by the Pirates from San Francisco in a surprise trading deadline deal July 31, gave five runs and seven hits in six innings.
Diamondbacks 9, Marlins 6
MIAMI (AP) – Arizona bounced back from Tuesday’s 14-5 loss with 15 hits, including a two-run homer by Chris Snyder.
The NL West leaders won for the 18th time in 23 games and improved to 5-1 against the Marlins this season.
Eric Byrnes, Mark Reynolds and Orlando Hudson all had three hits, and Doug Davis (10-10) allowed seven hits and four runs over 5 1-3 innings to win his fifth straight decision.
Jose Valverde pitched a hitless ninth for his 36th save.
Byrnes doubled twice and drove in two runs, while Reynolds singled three times for the second straight games and is batting .474 over the past 10 games.
Cody Ross hit a three-run homer for Florida, but Sergio Mitre (5-6) allowed 10 hits and five runs in six innings. He fell to 1-6 lifetime at Dolphin Stadium.
Nationals 4, Phillies 2
WASHINGTON (AP) – Tim Redding drove in two runs and limited Philadelphia to two runs and three hits in six-plus innings to lead Washington.
Redding (2-3) gave up a leadoff home run to Jayson Werth in the third and singles to Ryan Howard and Wes Helms. He struck out seven and walked three in winning for the first time in six starts.
Redding’s two-run double in the second was his second hit of the season and his first RBIs since June 19, 2003.
Washington added two runs in the sixth on a run-scoring double-play grounder and Ryan Church’s 10th home run which knocked out Kyle Kendrick (5-3), who allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings.
Chad Cordero worked a perfect ninth for his 27th save.
Cardinals 8, Brewers 3
MILWAUKEE (AP) – Scott Rolen had the eighth four-hit game of his career and Albert Pujols hit his 275th home run to back St. Louis’ Joel Pineiro.
The Cardinals closed within 3 1/2 games of the NL Central-leading Brewers and will go for the three-game sweep on Thursday.
Pineiro (2-1), acquired in a trade with Boston on July 31, gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings for his second straight victory.
Rookie Yovani Gallardo (4-3) gave up seven runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings – including home runs to Pujols and Rolen in the first inning.
Pujols’ 25th homer of the season made it 1-0, and Rolen followed a single by Jim Edmonds with his eighth homer, a two-run shot. Bill Hall of the Brewers hit a solo homer in the second, breaking a 27-game, 105 at-bat homerless streak, but the Cardinals got an RBI double from Yadier Molina in the fourth and then pulled away with three runs in the sixth.
Edmonds added a homer in the seventh – his first since June 9 – putting St. Louis ahead 8-1.
