BALTIMORE (AP) -Earl Weaver returned to Baltimore on Friday night, and for the first time since 1979, so did the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Weaver, pitcher Scott McGregor and third baseman Doug DeCinces were on hand to help Baltimore fans revel in the memory of the 1979 Orioles team that won the AL pennant before falling to the Pirates in the World Series. Weaver was manager of the team, which won 102 games but blew a 3-1 lead in the Series against Pittsburgh.
The current Baltimore manager, Dave Trembley, wasn’t counting on getting much advice from the Hall of Famer.
“I’m going to wait for Earl Weaver to come in the dugout and talk about bunt defense,” Trembley said. “And Earl’s going to go, ‘Hey, I don’t want to talk about bunt defense. Hit that three-run homer, kid.”’
The Orioles wore throwback uniforms, complete with orange and black stripes and old fashioned leg wear.
“I don’t think a lot of these guys know how to put stirrups on. You might want to check to see if they have them on backward,” Trembley said with a chuckle.
Brian Roberts got it right, although he looked rather strange with the stirrups pulled up to his knees.
