BALTIMORE (AP) -Orioles pitcher Koji Uehara was struck in the chest with a line drive Wednesday and was removed from Baltimore’s game against the Los Angeles Angels.
The play occurred in the seventh inning. Gary Matthews hit a shot that struck Uehara and bounded toward first base. Uehara doubled over and then fell to the ground as Matthews crossed first base.
Uehara finally rose to his feet and walked off the field with help from trainer Richie Bancells. The extent of the injury was not immediately known.
Uehara, the Orioles’ first Japanese-born pitcher, gave up consecutive homers earlier in the inning and had already thrown 102 pitches before being leaving.
