DETROIT (AP) -Magglio Ordonez was scratched from the Detroit Tigers’ lineup Sunday because of minor stiffness in his left knee.
“They just wanted to give me the day off,” Ordonez said before the series finale against the New York Mets.
Ordonez said he will play Tuesday at home against the Milwaukee Brewers after the Tigers are off on Monday. The outfielder said not pushing himself into the lineup is a key to staying healthy.
“I’ve been playing every day, so if I don’t feel great, they want to give me the day off,” he said after a long visit to the training room. “It will be nice to have today and tomorrow off.”
Ordonez played in a team-high 60 of Detroit’s first 61 games and has proved that he’s a star when healthy.
Entering Sunday, he led the majors with a .367 batting average, 30 doubles and 153 total bases and his 56 RBIs trailed only Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees.
The Tigers gave Ordonez a $75 million, five-year deal – a contract that could pay him as much as $105 million over seven seasons – in 2005 after an injured left knee limited him to 52 games with the Chicago White Sox the previous season.
