SEATTLE (AP) -Ichiro Suzuki set the Seattle Mariners’ club record with a hit in his 25th consecutive game by singling in the first inning Friday night against Texas.
Suzuki hit Kevin Millwood’s second pitch off the glove of diving shortstop Michael Young in short left field to extend his career-best streak and break Seattle’s previous mark set by Joey Cora in 1997. It is the longest hitting streak in the major leagues this season.
As Suzuki stood on first base amid a loud standing ovation from the crowd at Safeco Field, the six-time All-Star smiled, took off his batting helmet and tipped it toward the fans.
Ichiro then stole second, advanced to third on Jose Vidro’s groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Guillen.
The single gave Suzuki, playing in the final year of a contract for the first time in 15 seasons in the major leagues and Japan, a .425 average (45-for-106) during his streak.
This is the sixth time he has had a hitting streak of 20 or more games, the most of any active major leaguer.
