SEATTLE (AP) -Mariners first baseman Richie Sexson was ejected in the sixth inning of Sunday’s game against the Oakland Athletics by first base umpire Mark Carlson.
Donnie Murphy led off the sixth inning with a grounder up the middle. Shortstop Willie Bloomquist tracked down the grounder, but his throw was slightly wide of first. Sexson fell to catch the ball, but Carlson – who was positioned behind Sexson – said the 6-foot-8 first baseman pulled his foot.
Sexson looked up to Carlson and calmly said a few words before Carlson threw him out. Seattle manager John McLaren ran out and got into an animated argument with Carlson, but was not ejected.
An inning earlier, Sexson shook his head and looked in Carlson’s direction after being called out on a check-swing third strike.
Ben Broussard took over for Sexson at first.
