SAN DIEGO (AP) -San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy will come off the disabled list and face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.
Peavy reacted well to his four-inning simulated start Saturday with no physical setbacks to his strained right elbow.
“We didn’t feel there was any need to either take more time or move him up,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “We thought the time was right to slot him in Thursday.”
Peavy had no doubt that he is ready to go.
“Like I said the other day, I’m chomping at the bit,” he said. “I’m as ready as I will ever be. I feel good and this is the right time to do it.”
Peavy’s last start was on May 14 at the Chicago Cubs. But the club shut him down when a lingering pain in his elbow continued after that start. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 20, retroactive to May 15.
There had been some discussion about whether to bring Peavy back against the Dodgers or wait until San Diego played at Cleveland on Friday to start a six-game road trip.
“A pitcher might have an advantage facing a team (Cleveland) for the first time, but we thought the time was such where (Thursday) was a good day to slot him,” Black said. “It just fit the schedule.”
Peavy is the reigning NL Cy Young winner. The right-hander is 4-3 with a 2.91 ERA in nine starts with one complete game.
The Padres also announced Tuesday they designated left-handed pitcher Wil Ledezma for assignment and recalled left-handed pitcher Joe Thatcher from Triple-A Portland.
Ledezma was 0-2 with a 5.02 ERA in 14 games with the Padres, including six starts. Ledezma’s final five starts came in Peavy’s spot in the rotation. He had no decision in his last start on Sunday, an 8-6 Padres’ win over the New York Mets, when he allowed five runs on six hits over four innings.
