NEW YORK (AP) -San Francisco general manager Brian Sabean said Thursday that the Giants are examining their bullpen and could do something in the next two days to address the problem.
Giants relievers were 4-9 and had been successful on 11 of 17 save chances entering Thursday night’s game against the New York Mets. New York won 5-4 in 12 innings Tuesday night when Armando Benitez balked in the tying run and surrendered a game-ending homer to Carlos Delgado.
Benitez is 0-3 with nine saves in 11 chances and a 4.67 ERA, and the San Francisco Chronicle reported on its web site Thursday night that the Giants are trying to deal the closer. The paper reported the Florida Marlins were one of two teams “engaged in serious trade talks” about the right-hander.
“We’ve got to the point where we are going to have to do something, and hopefully within the next 24 or 48 hours we’ll resolve it internally or externally,” Sabean said on his weekly KNBR radio program. “Right now we are exploring options.”
The Marlins declined to comment on their interest in Benitez, who saved 47 games for Florida in 2004.
“We don’t comment on any rumors,” team spokesman Matt Roebuck said.
Benitez is scheduled to make $7.6 million in 2007, the final season of his $21.5 million, three-year deal.
