CLEVELAND (AP) -The Kansas City Royals activated left-hander John Bale from the 60-day disabled list Saturday.
Bale, signed in the offseason, was placed on the DL in spring training because of tightness in his shoulder. He also strained his left gluteus while on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Omaha in early June.
The 32-year-old Bale hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since 2003 with Cincinnati. He spent the last three seasons with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in Japan. Bale, who has also pitched for Toronto and Baltimore, is 2-2 with a 4.69 ERA in 27 career appearances, including nine starts. He will pitch out of the bullpen.
Left-hander Neal Musser was optioned to Omaha. He had a 5.40 ERA in 12 appearances.
To make room for Bale on the 40-man roster, the Royals placed right-hander Roman Colon on the 60-day DL. Colon, acquired Friday from Detroit for a player to be named, has spent the entire season on the DL while recovering from offseason neck surgery.
Colon was charged with felonious assault after a clubhouse brawl that occurred on June 12 while he was on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Toledo. He was fighting with a teammate when another Toledo pitcher, Jason Karnuth, tried to break it up. Colon hit Karnuth and broke several bones in his face, according to a police report.
