SAN DIEGO (AP) -The Colorado Rockies purchased the contract of right-hander Elmer Dessens on Thursday in time for him to start against the San Diego Padres.
To make room on the roster, right-hander Aaron Cook was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, with a strained left oblique muscle.
Dessens hadn’t pitched in the big leagues since May 18 with Milwaukee. After going on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder, he was reinstated on Aug. 1 and designated for assignment three days later.
The Rockies signed him to a minor league contract on Friday. He was making his first big league start since Oct. 2, 2005, at San Diego, while with Los Angeles. He came in with a 47-60 career record, and a 4.44 ERA.
