BOSTON (AP) -Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew was out of the lineup against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, a day after “tweaking” his back and leaving the game.
Drew had a similar injury that forced him to miss the season-opening series in Japan, but this one is not as bad, manager Terry Francona said. The Red Sox have an off-day on Thursday, and Drew should be available for the weekend series against Baltimore and Tuesday’s All-Star game, where he will be on the AL roster as a reserve.
Drew, the AL player of the month for June, is batting .298 with 16 homers and 53 RBIs.
Francona also said that pitcher Bartolo Colon will slow down in his rehab from a lower back strain. Colon had progressed to long toss from 120 feet, but “he started feeling it a little bit,” Francona said.
“We just weren’t real comfortable with how things were possibly progressing,” Francona said.
