BOSTON (AP) -Kevin Cash became a free agent after the Boston Red Sox declined to tender the catcher a contract for 2009.
Cash appeared in 61 games for Boston last season, hitting .225 with 3 homers and 15 RBIs. He was used as the regular catcher for knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.
The Red Sox’ No. 1 catcher, Jason Varitek, also became a free agent after the season.
The team said in a statement Friday that it has tendered contracts to the 28 other unsigned players on its major league roster.
