PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Greg Dobbs and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed Friday to a $2.5 million, two-year contract that avoided arbitration for the pinch-hitting specialist.
Dobbs hit .301 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs in 128 games for the World Series champions. He batted .355 with two home runs and 16 RBIs as a pinch hitter, leading major leaguers in pinch hits (22) and second in pinch-RBIs. His 22 pinch hits set a Phillies season record.
The 30-year-old Dobbs will earn $1.15 million this year and $1.35 million in 2010. He earned $440,000 last season.
Dobbs has a career average of .276 with 21 home runs and 127 RBIs in 370 games with Seattle and Philadelphia. The Phillies claimed him off waivers in 2007.
Seven Phillies remain in arbitration: First baseman Ryan Howard, left-hander Cole Hamels, outfielders Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth; and right-handers Joe Blanton, Chad Durbin and Ryan Madson.
Players who don’t settle by Tuesday will exchange figures with their clubs. Hearings take place next month.
