SAN DIEGO (AP) -Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy played catch and took batting practice on Tuesday, his first baseball activity since going on the disabled list with a sore right elbow.
“It felt good to be out and about, and it felt good that I did it all pain free,” Peavy said before the Padres played the Washington Nationals in a matchup of last-place teams.
Peavy hadn’t thrown since playing catch May 17 before the Padres’ game at Seattle. He was scratched from his scheduled start at home against St. Louis on May 19 and had an MRI exam, which showed swelling but no structural damage in his pitching elbow. He was put on the DL retroactive to May 15, a day after he lasted just four innings against the Chicago Cubs. Peavy said he had felt discomfort in right elbow his last three or four starts.
Peavy had another MRI on Tuesday. It showed swelling but confirmed there was no damage to any ligaments or tendons.
“It gives you peace of mind knowing you can let it go and not hurt yourself long-term,” he said.
Peavy (4-3, 2.91) made 40 tosses on flat ground to trainer Todd Hutcheson.
“Everything felt normal, so I think that was good news. Obviously we had to wait a little bit longer than what we thought. But everything went well today and we’ll try it again tomorrow and hopefully everything will go well tomorrow and we’ll progress toward getting back out there.”
Peavy said he hopes to throw off a mound by the weekend. “Hopefully it won’t take too much longer after getting up on a mound,” he said.
