SAN DIEGO (AP) -Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the San Diego Padres on Tuesday with a strained and swollen right elbow.
The move was retroactive to Thursday, a day after he lasted just four innings against the Chicago Cubs.
The Padres made the decision Monday night to put Peavy (4-3, 2.91 ERA) on the DL. The ace felt discomfort in his right elbow the last three or four starts. He was scratched from his scheduled start Monday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Left-handed reliever Joe Thatcher was recalled from Triple-A Portland to take Peavy’s roster spot. He was on the opening day roster and went 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in 16 relief appearances before being optioned to Portland on May 11. Thatcher made two relief appearances with Portland, posting a 9.00 ERA with no record.
Left-hander Wil Ledezma will take Peavy’s spot in the rotation. Ledezma lasted only four innings in Monday night’s 8-2 loss.
