PITTSBURGH (AP) -The San Diego Padres claimed outfielder Hiram Bocachica off waivers from the Oakland Athletics on Thursday and plan to activate him Friday.
The Padres did not make a move to free a roster spot for Bocachica, but will before playing Friday night in Washington.
Bocachica, a right-handed hitter, was 1-for-17 with a home run and three RBIs for Oakland this season and had a .318 average with nine homers and 32 RBIS in 35 games with Triple-A Sacramento. He has a .212 career average in 472 at-bats with the Dodgers, Tigers, Mariners and Athletics.
“He’s a good defender and can play all three outfield positions,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “He can run a little bit and is swinging the bat well in Triple-A. He’s had good success against left-handed pitchers and helps balance our bench.”
