SAN DIEGO (AP) -Padres right fielder Brian Giles was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday after missing just more than a month due to a bone bruise in his right knee.
To make room on the roster, the Padres optioned right-hander Mike Thompson to Triple-A Portland a day after calling him up.
Giles was put on the DL on May 26, retroactive to May 20, with a bone bruise that had bothered him for weeks. He completed a three-game rehab assignment Wednesday night with Class A Lake Elsinore. Giles batted .400 (4-for-10) with a home run, three RBIs, two runs scored and four walks during his rehab assignment.
Giles is hitting .276 this season with one homer and 12 RBIs.
Thompson was recalled from Portland prior to Wednesday’s game at San Francisco. After making the Padres’ opening day roster, Thompson went 0-1 with a 7.84 in five appearances and was sent to Portland on April 19.
