BALTIMORE (AP) -Desperate for healthy pitching arms, the Baltimore Orioles purchased the contract of right-hander Victor Santos from the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
Santos, 30, was 1-4 with a 5.14 ERA in 32 games, all in relief, after making the Reds out of spring training as a non-roster player. He was designated for assignment Aug. 18 and sent outright to Triple-A Louisville, where he was 1-1 with a 1.11 ERA in eight games, including four starts.
Baltimore manager Dave Trembley announced before Friday’s game against Boston that rookie left-hander Garrett Olson would miss his next start after leaving Thursday’s game with tightness in his right forearm. The Orioles are also without left-hander Erik Bedard, who has not pitched since Aug. 25 with a strained muscle in his right side.
Santos has gone 23-46 with a 5.14 ERA over seven major league seasons with Detroit, Colorado, Texas, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Santos, the Orioles designated outfielder Jon Knott for assignment. Knott hit .250 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs with Triple-A Norfolk, and .214 with a homer and four RBIs in seven games with the Orioles.
