BALTIMORE (AP) -The Baltimore Orioles designated light-hitting shortstop Luis Hernandez for assignment Monday night and recalled from Triple-A Norfolk right-hander Radhames Liz, who will start Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins.
Liz was 1-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 11 starts for Norfolk. He worked at least six innings in each of his last seven starts before being removed after pitching one scoreless inning on May 31.
He was removed because the Orioles had an open slot in the rotation for Tuesday, and the team wanted to keep Liz on track for that assignment.
Liz was 0-2 with a 6.93 ERA in nine games (four starts) with the Orioles in 2007. He made his major league debut last August against Minnesota.
Hernandez was batting .241 (19-for-79) in 36 games for the Orioles. He had seen time at shortstop and second base for the Orioles this year after appearing in 30 games for Baltimore in 2007, batting .290 (20-69) with one home run and seven RBIs.
