ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -Royals right-hander Leo Nunez left Thursday night’s game against the Texas Rangers in the fourth inning after tearing a callous on his right thumb.
With the game tied at 1, Nunez gave up a leadoff infield single to Marlon Byrd that struck the back of Nunez’s right knee during his follow-through.
Nunez then threw two balls to Brad Wilkerson before Royals manager Buddy Bell and team trainer Nick Swartz went to the mound to check on the pitcher, a converted reliever making his fourth major league start.
The problem was with Nunez’s hand, not his leg. He was replaced by left-hander John Bale.
