WASHINGTON (AP) -Washington Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson got a cortisone shot Monday to dull pain in his right hip that developed while working his way back from a broken leg that has sidelined him since late last season.
Johnson will do only upper-body work until Thursday, when he will be allowed to resume exercises and drills involving his legs.
He broke his right femur in a collision with right fielder Austin Kearns during a game against the New York Mets on Sept. 23, 2006.
In other Nationals injury news, manager Manny Acta said left-hander Micah Bowie is “progressing slower than we thought” as he recovers from a left hip injury, while right-hander Shawn Hill – on the disabled list since May because of a strained left shoulder – will throw a bullpen session Tuesday.
Bowie, on the DL retroactive to June 28, is “going to have to feel close to 100 percent before he gets to the mound,” Acta said.
Bowie sounded more optimistic, though, saying he’s been throwing long toss and thinks he could be pitching off a mound by the weekend.
“I think it’s going really well, considering two weeks into it we’re running, throwing,” Bowie said.
He’s 4-3 with a 4.39 ERA in 28 appearances, including eight starts.
