WASHINGTON (AP) -The Washington Nationals designated outfielder Ryan Langerhans for assignment Saturday after their 7-4 loss to the New York Mets and activated right-hander Jesus Colome from the 15-day disabled list.
The Nationals have 10 days to trade or waive Langerhans or send him to the minors.
Langerhans, acquired from Oakland on May 2 for outfielder Chris Snelling, was hitting .182 with five homers and 19 RBIs in 86 games with Washington. In 106 games with the Washington, Oakland and Atlanta this season, Langerhans hit .156.
Nationals manager Manny Acta said the acquisition of outfielder Wily Mo Pena from Boston made Langerhans expendable.
“The at-bats are not going to be here for him with Wily here. … We needed an arm in the bullpen more than we needed an extra outfielder,” Acta said.
Colome pitched a scoreless inning for Triple-A Columbus at Toledo on Saturday night in a rehabilitation assignment. The right-hander was 4-0 with one save and a 2.76 ERA in 40 games before being sidelined June 24 with an infection in his right buttock.
