NEW YORK (AP) -Major League Baseball will hold a ceremonial draft of living former Negro Leagues players before its annual amateur draft June 6.
Those selected will represent Negro Leaguers players who didn’t have the chance to play for major league teams, the commissioner’s office said Tuesday. MLB was not sure how many former Negro Leagues players are living.
The draft will be held in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., for the second straight season and will be televised by ESPN2 for the second consecutive year. The draft also will be open to the public, and several players eligible for selection are expected to attend.
Tampa Bay has the first pick, followed by Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Baltimore and San Francisco. The New York Mets (Tom Glavine) and Minnesota Twins (Torii Hunter) will have two first-round selections because they lose Type A free agents.
