BOSTON (AP) David Ortiz homered again as the Red Sox beat the struggling New York Yankees 8-0 on Saturday night to finish their high-scoring April with another big night at the plate.
Jackie Bradley Jr tripled twice and drove in three runs while Mookie Betts had three RBIs for the Red Sox, who had not beaten New York by eight or more runs in a shutout at Fenway Park since 1973.
Ortiz added the fifth home run of his farewell season – and second in two nights against the Yankees – in the seventh inning, taking Johnny Barbato’s fastball over the right-field fence.
”We had a number of good at-bats up and down the lineup,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said. ”There’s not one guy that’s looking to be the hero on a given night. It’s a unit the way it’s functioning right. So we stay with that approach that should pay good dividends.”
The New York Mets fared better on Saturday, holding off the San Francisco Giants 6-5 for their eighth win in a row.
Michael Conforto and Wilmer Flores both homered for the Mets before Jeurys Familia closed for his eighth save in as many chances for the defending National League champions.
”There’s not much that we’re not doing,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.
Jayson Werth’s three-run homer capped a four-run first inning in Washington’s 6-1 victory over St. Louis while Justin Upton hit a three-run homer in the first inning to help the Detroit Tigers top the Minnesota Twins 4-1.
Curt Casali drove in the winning run with a single in the ninth inning as Tampa Bay edged Toronto 4-3 while John Jaso hit a leadoff homer as Pittsburgh defeated Cincinnati 5-1 for its sixth straight win.
Jose Abreu hit a single in the ninth inning off reliever Vance Worley to lift the Chicago White Ssox to an 8-7 win over Baltimore while Freddy Galvis hit the go-ahead single after he homered to lead Philadelphia past Cleveland 4-3 for its fifth straight victory.
”We’re on a roll right now and we hope we continue with it,” Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said.
Adeiny Hechavarria had four hits, including one of four solo home runs that helped Miami beat Milwaukee 7-5 as the Marlins won their seventh consecutive game.
Rougned Odor matched a Rangers record with three doubles and Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer as Texas posted a 7-2 victory over Los Angeles while Trevor Story’s two-run triple in the top of the ninth inning broke a tie as Colorado beat Arizona 5-2.
Kyle Seager hit a three-run homer as Seattle handed Kansas City its fifth consecutive loss with a 6-0 shutout while Melvin Upton Jr. hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the fifth inning as San Diego beat the Dodgers 5-2.
”We’re sticking to our game plan against these pitchers,” Upton said. ”We’re staying in the zone, getting good pitches to hit and swinging at them. But we’re not going to do this individually. We’ve got to do it as a team.”
