NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -The New York Mets purchased the contract of Brian Burgamy from the Triple-A Newark Bears of the Atlantic League on Thursday.
Burgamy was hitting .265 with six doubles, three home runs and 14 RBIs. His on-base percentage was .420 and he led the team in walks, reaching base in 28 consecutive games.
Burgamy was versatile in the field, too. He started games at five positions – each of the outfield spots, second base and third – and even pitched a scoreless inning in his most recent game.
“Brian proved himself to be a very valuable part of our club in the first five weeks of the season, and we are very happy that he has earned another opportunity with an affiliated organization,” Bears assistant general manager Jim Cerny said.
Burgamy will be reporting to the St. Lucie Mets of the Class-A Florida State League.
