PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -Pedro Martinez will wait to see whether the New York Mets want him back in 2009.
Martinez is beginning the final season of his four-year, $53 million deal and eager to find out how his right shoulder holds up. He had major surgery on it in October 2006, spent most of last year recovering and went 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA in five starts.
The 36-year-old Martinez said it’s up to the Mets to talk to him about upping the deal.
“If they approach me, that’s fine,” he said Tuesday. “I’m very content, very satisfied with the way they have treated me here. They have my respect, regardless of whether they offer me or not, or I have to go somewhere else.”
Martinez said he was not worried about his future.
“They will know when to do it,” he said. “They will know if they want to do it. I will just sit and wait.”
Martinez is one of three Mets starting pitchers who can become free agents after the season. Oliver Perez and Orlando Hernandez also are in their last year.
Martinez said he would not go through another significant rehab program.
“You’re not going to see me do it again,” Martinez said. “But at that time, I felt like I had a commitment to the fans, to the team and I committed myself. … I felt like I had to give it a try and respond to those people the way I should.”
It has not been determined when Martinez will make his first start of the exhibition season.
