OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -The Florida Marlins called up outfielder Jai Miller from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday to provide some depth after center fielder Alfredo Amezaga injured his left groin while running the bases Saturday.
It was a short stay for Miller, who made his major league debut in the seventh and struck out in his only at-bat. He was optioned back to Triple-A after the Marlins’ 7-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics.
This marked Miller’s first time on a major league roster, though he spent time in big league camp at spring training. Florida needed to clear roster room for left fielder Josh Willingham, who will come off the disabled list Tuesday. He has been sidelined since late April with a back injury.
Florida also placed right-handed reliever Burke Badenhop on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 14 with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder.
Gonzalez said Amezaga could be back as soon as Tuesday following the team’s day off Monday, but the extent of his groin injury wasn’t yet known. For now, the club is calling it a “little tweak,” Gonzalez said.
Badenhop had been limited to throwing on flat ground because of his tender shoulder. He was playing catch in Seattle this past week and felt some cramping. He will be examined by team doctors back home in Miami.
“It wasn’t getting any better,” Badenhop said. “It’s nothing that’s killing me but the tightness wasn’t letting me generate my normal arm slot.”
