FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) – Boston Red Sox president Larry Lucchino says his team and the New York Yankees are ”very different animals” and he’s proud of that difference.
In the past two offseasons, the Red Sox have signed mid-level free agents to short-term contracts. This winter, the Yankees signed center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury and pitcher Masahiro Tanaka to seven-year contracts and catcher Brian McCann to a five-year deal.
Yankees president Randy Levine says he feels bad for Lucchino. He says Lucchino always is spooked by the Yankees and he can understand why. Levine says that in 2012 under Lucchino’s and manager Bobby Valentine’s plan the Red Sox finished in last place.
Boston won the 2013 World Series under John Farrell.
