NEW YORK (AP) -The short-handed Mets likely will decide on Friday whether to put shortstop Jose Reyes on the disabled list.
Reyes hasn’t played since Wednesday after hurting his right calf at Los Angeles, an injury that kept him out of seven games on a 10-game trip. He tested his legs before Monday night’s series opener against Washington but didn’t run hard.
“It’s not ready yet to go full speed,” Reyes said.
He hopes to return when the leg feels about 80-85 percent. If he isn’t ready by Friday, the Mets would put him on the DL and backdate the move.
“Sometimes his 80 or 90 might be better than what we have,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said.
Reyes is only one of the Mets’ regulars who is hurt.
mes because of back spasms.
Ryan Church, however, was still sidelined by a sore right hamstring that caused him to miss his third straight start. An MRI showed no damage, and while he felt better, he had discomfort caused by tendinitis.
Catcher Brian Schneider, out since April 16 with a back muscle strain, isn’t ready to return despite playing in extended spring training.
“It becomes a difficult challenge when you play a National League club. It definitely becomes a difficult challenge because you need those pinch hits. You need that versatility,” Manuel said. “Guys like Livan Hernandez will have to have spikes on the whole game. … Mike Pelfrey might have to have spikes on the whole game because you don’t know if you’ll need a pinch hitter or something like that.”
Manuel joked about the injuries during the trip with head trainer Ray Ramirez.
“I told him, `Man, you spent more time at doctor’s offices, hospitals than you spent at the field. That’s not a good thing,”’ Manuel said.
General manager Omar Minaya said the Mets might bring up top outfield prospect Fernando Martinez because of the injuries.
“He’s getting close to being ready,” Minaya said. “He would be one of the options if we were to consider making a move.”
Notes: LHP Oliver Perez (right knee tendinitis) will throw 50 pitches or more in a rehab outing Tuesday for Triple-A Buffalo.
