KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -Before Carlos Lee stepped into the batter’s box for Panama he asked the umpire to check the ball for anything unusual.
Lee was in a joking mood when he faced Brian Moehler and his Houston teammates Thursday in Panama’s final warmup for the World Baseball Classic, a game won by the Astros 7-5.
Moehler obliged and tossed the ball into the umpire, who found nothing wrong. A laughing Moehler then got Lee to ground out to second.
“That’s between me and Moehler,” Lee said. “We’ve got a little thing going on. It’s all in fun.”
Panama also had some fun at the plate against Moehler, reaching him for five runs in three innings.
New York Mets prospect Ruben Tejada hit a two-run double, part of a four-run second inning.
