CINCINNATI (AP) -John Allen, who ran the Cincinnati Reds after former owner Marge Schott was suspended in the 1990s, resigned Tuesday as the team’s chief operating officer.
Allen had been in charge of the team’s business operations the last two seasons under owner Bob Castellini. His legacy will be how he guided baseball’s first professional franchise through one of its darkest times.
Allen joined the Reds as controller in 1995 and became managing executive a year later, when Schott was suspended by Major League Baseball. Allen immediately took the team in a different direction, adding fan promotions and other activities that Schott ended when she took ownership.
During the next few years, Allen was essentially in charge of the team. He oversaw negotiations with Hamilton County and construction of Great American Ball Park, which opened in 2003.
When Castellini bought control of the Reds before the 2006 season, he divided responsibilities and put Allen in charge of the financial side, leaving baseball operations up to the general manager.
