CLEVELAND (AP) -Kerry Wood is the Cleveland Indians’ new closer.
The club announced it signed the former Chicago Cubs star to a two-year deal worth nearly $20 million on Saturday. The deal includes a third-year option with a vesting mechanism.
General manager Mark Shapiro is expected to announce the deal later in the day.
Wood saved 34 games last year in his first season as a closer for Chicago. He reached a preliminary agreement with the Indians during the winter meetings. Because of a history of arm and elbow problems, Wood had to pass a physical before the Indians would finalize the package.
The 31-year-old is 77-61 with a 3.65 ERA in his career, all with the Cubs.
