CLEVELAND (AP) -The Cleveland Indians traded minor league infielder Jorge Velandia to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday for cash.
The 33-year-old Velandia was at Triple-A Buffalo after playing briefly for the Toronto Blue Jays and Indians earlier this year. He hit .209 with eight RBIs in 52 games with the Bisons.
Velandia played for Tampa Bay last year, batting .320 with the only two home runs of his career and 11 RBIs in 14 games.
Velandia, who also has played for San Diego, Oakland and the New York Mets, has a .189 batting average and 23 RBIs in 174 career games.
He went 0-for-7 in three games for Toronto in May, was released and signed with Cleveland in June, going 3-for-8 (.375) in seven games before being sent down.
Because the AL East-leading Rays acquired Velandia before Sept. 1, he is eligible for their postseason roster if they make the playoffs.
